Assign and Read: Getting Bookshare Books is Easier Than Ever

The end of summer ushers in a new school year, new students, and a mad rush to get textbooks and other educational materials. How can teachers and school librarians get accessible books for students with print disabilities and save time?

Assign and Read

Bookshare has made getting students books quick and easy. In one fell swoop, teachers can add students and set them up to read with the newly updated “Assign and Read” feature:
  • Add students to rosters
  • Give them a Student Login (so they can access Bookshare independently)
  • Add books directly to Reading Lists

Assign Books to New Member
That’s all teachers need to do! Students can access Bookshare on their own (with their handy Student Login) at school, home, library, or anywhere with Internet and read assigned books.

Nicholas Bowen, Bookshare Customer Service Manager says, “Our goal at Bookshare is to ensure that all teachers have the tools to get the books their students need quickly and easily. Assign and Read is that next big tool.”

Mr. Turner (Howard). Thank you for the compliment. From the Benetech/Bookshare staff.

I assigned 2 books to a student on the reading list, but when logged in to the student’s account to make sure I did it correctly, it says that the ‘book is not available in Web Reader, please ask your sponsor to download it’. I did go back and download it again and it tells me it’s on the student’s list, but the same thing keeps happening. I’ve assigned books to other students in the past, but this is the first time this is happening. HELP!

Hi Kathy:Thanks for trying out our new Assign and Read feature. Some books may not be available to read with Bookshare Web Reader. In these cases, it’s best to use a different reading tool. You can learn about compatible reading tools on the Bookshare website: https://www.bookshare.org/cms/member-preferred-tools. In addition, our Bookshare support team can help you further troubleshoot an issue and provide great advice. You can contact support directly at this web page: https://www.bookshare.org/contactUs.
