The Bookshare Volunteer Program is very pleased to have the continued assistance of Dr. Scott Rains, the well-known author and consultant on topics about travel and issues in the tourism industry of interest to people with disabilities. The operations team appreciated Scott’s energy, creative new approach, and leadership so much that they decided to extend his interim contract and keep him on board as a Fellow. To support the growth of the Volunteer Program, Scott will develop a curriculum and training materials for volunteers, in addition to recruiting volunteers.

For those of you who don’t know Scott, he is the founder of the global forum on Inclusive Tourism – Tour Watch. Rains’ articles have also appeared in New Mobility, Emerging Horizons, Venture, Brave New Traveler, Challenges, TravelBiz Monitor, Enabled Online, Contours, Accessible Portugal, Audacity, Travel and Transitions, eTur Brazil, Success & Ability, Turismo Polibea, [with]TV, and Disaboom among others. He served as Director of Services and Curriculum at SeniorNet. Scott is an active writer, consultant and speaker. His scholarly work includes editorship of the first body of research on travel and disability in the field of Disability Studies with the publication of the 2006 (Vol. 2 Issue 2) of the Review of Disability Studies. He consults with travel agents and tour operators worldwide. Scott is currently working with a three-nation accessible tourism consortium (Turismo para Todos) in South America, a consortium involving a municipality and several universities in Thailand, and serves as Producer of tourism programming for the start-up tv channel [with]TV. Those of you who know Scott know how lucky we are to have him on board. Those of you who know our Volunteer Coordinator, Pavi Mehta, know how very glad we are to have her back from her leave of absence.
