Defy Expectations with the Bookshare Book Club

Co-authored by Michelle Chan, Bookshare Collection Development Associate

Welcome again to the Bookshare Book Club! Each month, Bookshare staff will choose books for members to read before hosting discussions near the end of the month. The conversations will take place through Zoom webinars. While we have created this club with Bookshare members in mind, everyone is welcome to join, including non-Bookshare members.

In addition to our adult book club, we have launched the Bookshare Teen Book Club. The teen book club is geared towards ages 12-18, but everyone is welcome to join.

Bookshare Book Club Pick for Teens

April’s book for teens will be The Cruel Prince by Holly Black. Jude’s parents were murdered a decade ago by her adoptive Faerie father. She and her two sisters now live among the Gentry, although they are still looked down upon because of their human blood. Despite all this, Jude still wants a place in the Faerie Court, even if that means standing up against the wicked Prince Cardan. Jude’s determination to belong sets off plans of deception and violence throughout the court, and no one is prepared for the outcome.

The Zoom webinar discussion for The Cruel Prince will take place on Tuesday, April 27th at 4:00 pm PT. Register here.

Bookshare Book Club Pick for Adults

April’s book for adults will be The Lost Apothecary by Sarah Penner. In 18th century London, women come to Nella’s apothecary for permanent solutions to the men in their lives. In the present day, Caroline is recovering from learning of her husband’s infidelity and finds an old vial, soon linking it to the apothecary murders of London. This discovery will bring the women’s stories together, with consequences for everyone involved.

The Zoom webinar discussion for The Lost Apothecary will take place on Thursday, April 29th at 5:00 pm PT. Register here.

In this time of social distancing, it’s more important than ever to stay connected, so be sure to join the conversation!
