Jose, a student in Plano, Texas, struggled to read basic books in kindergarten. In second grade, Jose was diagnosed with dyslexia. A therapist gave him an accessible ebook from Bookshare that he reads on the family iPad. “Jose is ten times happier! He is a different child and learner. He understands the stories, and his listening skills are acute. Bookshare gives Jose reading independence. He has meaningful conversations with friends and knows what he likes to read. Digital accessible books are an educational resource that all children with learning disabilities should have.” – Lola, Jose’s mother
Many Ways to Read Books in Spanish
The Spanish books, like all the accessible ebooks in the Bookshare library, are available in multiple formats: high-quality audio, synchronized text with audio, large text, braille, and Word. In order to listen to audio narration in a foreign language, we recommend that members use a reading app offered by one of our partners and download a text-to-speech voice in the desired language.
Dolphin EasyReader, a free reading app for iOS and Android, offers twelve high-quality voices in Spanish, plus two Catalan voices. Capti Voice, also free for iOS, supports Spanish voices. A paid app that is popular with Bookshare members is Voice Dream Reader that supports all 61 iOS 12 voices as well as nine Acapela Spanish voices available as an in-app purchase. Immersive Reader, available for free in Microsoft Office Online, offers three voices in Spanish (Latin America, Mexico, and Spain).
“I use Bookshare to find books in Spanish, which helps me with a goal that’s both personal and professional. Gaining fluency in the language will help me connect with people from different cultures, and the language will also help me in my career. I primarily read using my computer with the MS Word Online program because I love the quality of the TTS voices in Immersive Reader. Sometimes I read using the Dolphin EasyReader app on my phone. Having a variety of reading tools to choose from really improves the reading experience.” – Courtney P., Bookshare member, Texas
We encourage teachers and students to explore these engaging and culturally rich books for a back-to-school reading boost. Láncese al aprendizaje y descubre la alegría de leer con Bookshare!
