The Bookshare staff is here to help with enticing book recommendations for kids, teens, and adults to help Bookshare members spring into reading.

Boredom-Buster Books for Kids

Chelsea says her son loves the Wings of Fire series by Tui T. Sutherland. Dive into this middle-grade fantasy world complete with dragonets, magic, a queen, a prophecy, and a showdown between freedom and destiny.

Vanessa’s daughter enjoys the Junie B. Jones series by Barbara Park that contains 28 books about a lovable, mischievous kindergartner who constantly gets in predicaments with hilarious results.

High Interest Books for Young Readers – a special collection of 67 high interest, low vocabulary books for elementary and middle grade readers that will entice even the most book-averse. Start with The Mysterious Benedict Society or Al Capone Does My Shirts.

Covers of 7 books: Between Shades of Gray; Wings of Fire; Junie B. Jones and the Stupid Smelly Bus; I Know Why the Caged Bird Sings; Dial A for Aunties; Between Two Kingdoms; Misbehaving

Engaging Books for Reluctant Teen Readers

Laura recommends the bestselling YA historical fiction by Ruta Sepetys including Salt to the Sea, The Fountains of Silence, Between Shades of Grey, and I Must Betray You. Riveting stories of heroism, survival, and compassion set against turbulent world events such as the sinking of the Gustav Wilhelm in WWII, life in Spain under the dictatorship of Franco, Stalin’s brutal labor camps in Siberia, and the Romanian revolution.

Page-Turners for Adults

Katy & Julianna recommend Dial A for Aunties by Jesse Q. Sutanto. What happens when you mix one (accidental) murder with two thousand wedding guests, and then toss in a possible curse on three generations of an immigrant Chinese-Indonesian family? You get four meddling Asian aunties coming to the rescue!

Carrie recommends Between Two Kingdoms: A Memoir of a Life Interrupted by Suleika Jaouad. Suleika graduated from college and moved to Paris to be a war correspondent, only to have her life change in a heartbeat with a leukemia diagnosis. This memoir is a profound chronicle of survivorship and a fierce, tender, and inspiring exploration of what it means to begin again.

Paul recommends Misbehaving by Richard Thaler. This nonfiction book about behavioral economics explores what happens when economics meets psychology. Thaler studies human miscalculations and their effects on markets to learn how to make smarter decisions in an increasingly mystifying world.
