Uncover Secrets with the Bookshare Book Club

Co-authored by Michelle Chan, Bookshare Collection Development Associate.

Welcome back to the Bookshare Book Club! Each month, Bookshare staff will choose books for members to read before hosting discussions near the end of the month. The conversations will take place through Zoom webinars. While we have created this club with Bookshare members in mind, everyone is welcome to join, including non-Bookshare members.

In addition to our adult book club, we have launched the Bookshare Teen Book Club. The teen book club is geared towards ages 12-18, but everyone is welcome to join.

Bookshare Book Club Pick for Teens

September’s book for teens is Warcross by Marie Lu. Warcross is the biggest virtual reality game in the world, and Emika Chen makes her living hunting down the game’s illegal gamblers. When Emika hacks into the game, she accidentally glitches in, turning herself into a celebrity overnight. Catching the attention of the game’s creator, she’s hired to go undercover in the championship tournament to find a security breach. What she finds will change the game, and Emika, forever.

The Zoom webinar discussion for Warcross will take place on Tuesday, September 29th at 4:00 pm PT. Register here.

Bookshare Book Club Pick for Adults

September’s book for adults will be The Vanishing Half by Brit Bennett. Desiree and Stella Vignes, identical twin sisters in small town Louisiana, both run away from home at age 16. Their lives quickly split apart as Stella begins to pass as white and Desiree does not. Decades later, their lives reconverge as their daughters meet in California. The Vanishing Half’s examination of identity and relationships will stay with you long after the last page.

The Zoom webinar discussion for The Vanishing Half will take place on Thursday, September 24th at 5:00 pm PT. Register here.

In this time of social distancing, it’s more important than ever to stay connected, so be sure to join the conversation!
