Uncover New Worlds with the Bookshare Book Club

by Amreen Ahmed, Bookshare Operations Associate

Co-authored by Michelle Chan, Bookshare Collection Development Associate

Welcome again to the Bookshare Book Club! Each month, Bookshare staff will choose books for members to read before hosting discussions near the end of the month. The conversations will take place through Zoom webinars. While we have created this club with Bookshare members in mind, everyone is welcome to join, including non-Bookshare members.

In addition to our adult book club, we have launched the Bookshare Teen Book Club. The teen book club is geared towards ages 12-18, but everyone is welcome to join.

Bookshare Book Club Pick for Teens

February’s book for teens is Clap When You Land by Elizabeth Acevedo. Instead of meeting her father at the airport in the Dominican Republic, Camino Rios is met with the news that her father has died in a plane crash. Instead of sitting in class in New York City, Yahaira Rios is sitting with the news that her father has died in a plane crash. Their lives permanently changed, both girls are forced to face their new reality… and eventually each other.

The Zoom webinar discussion for Clap When You Land will take place on February 23 at 4:00 pm PT. Register here.

Bookshare Book Club Pick for Adults

February’s book for adults will be Black Buck by Mateo Askaripour. Darren’s job at a Midtown New York Starbucks is more than enough work for him, leaving him free to spend his time with his mom at their Bed-Stuy brownstone and his girlfriend, Soraya. However, taking a chance with Sumwun CEO’s Starbucks order sends Darren into the wild world of tech sales. As Darren rises within the company and experiences its insidious racism, he realizes he has to take matters into his own hands, and doing so will change the workforce forever.

The Zoom webinar discussion for Black Buck will take place on February 25 at 5:00 pm PT. Register here.

In this time of social distancing, it’s more important than ever to stay connected, so be sure to join the conversation!
